About Pregnancy Massage

If you’re experiencing any of the following conditions during your pregnancy, a massage may be just what your body needs to make it happy.

  • Back Pain
  • Sciatic Pain
  • Muscle / Leg Cramps
  • Edema / Swelling
  • Sacral Joint Pain
  • Stretch Marks

Massage also helps your body prepare for delivery by helping increase elasticity and range of motion in the joints and muscles associated with childbirth. And by helping blood flow in the legs, massage can reduce the chances of edema, varicose veins, and blood clots (if you already suffer from these conditions, then special precautions must be taken and you should let your doctor know you’re planning on getting a massage).

Generally, pregnancy massage uses mild pressure applied to the muscle groups to relax muscle tension and improve lymphatic and blood circulation. These techniques specifically address many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes brought on by hormone shifts during pregnancy.

According to the American Pregnancy Organization, studies show that pregnancy massage can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and the general health of the baby. Specifically, they say massage helps with the following:

  • Hormone regulation: Studies done in the past 10 years show that pregnancy massage significantly alters hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress, leading to mood regulation and improved cardiovascular health. In women who received bi-weekly massage for five weeks, massage reduced “stress” hormones (such as norepinephrine and cortisol) and increased dopamine and serotonin levels (low levels of these hormones are associated with depression). These changes in hormone levels can lead to fewer complications during birth.
  • Reduction of swelling: Edema, or swelling of the joints during pregnancy, is often caused by the heavy uterus reducing circulation and increasing pressure on the major blood vessels. Massage helps stimulate soft tissues to reduce collection of fluids in swollen joints, which also improves the removal of tissue waste carried by the body’s lymph system.
  • Improvement of nerve pain: In late pregnancy, many women experience sciatic nerve pain as the uterus rests on the muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back, spreading tension to the muscles of the upper and lower leg, causing them to swell and put pressure on nearby nerves. Massage therapy addresses the inflamed nerves by releasing the tension on nearby muscles.

Pregnancy massage is safe for most pregnant women. However, as a precaution, you should tell your doctor about your intention to get a massage if you:

  • Are considered a high-risk pregnancy
  • Have pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, blood clots, or hypertension,
  • Have experienced pre-term contractions or consistent Braxton-Hicks contractions, or
  • Have a history of miscarriage

These conditions don’t automatically exclude you from being able to have a pregnancy massage—massage can help maintain muscle tone, circulation, and decrease bed bound discomfort. But if you have any high risk conditions, it’s important that your physician be aware of any complimentary health treatments you’re receiving.

Therapist Training

While pregnancy massage is safe, it is important that your massage therapist have the proper training in it. Most massage schools only touch on pregnancy massage. Therapists who wish to specialize in it get advanced training from industry experts. If you are unsure whether your therapist has specialized training in pregnancy massage, ask. In order to practice pregnancy massage at Rejuvenations Massage Therapy, our therapists take an advanced training course.

What Can You Expect?

On your first visit, you’ll complete a questionnaire and talk with the therapist about your pregnancy and your needs. If you’ve had massage before, then you know how great it feels. But pregnancy massage is a little different. For example, the positioning during the massage is critical to the safety and well-being of both you and your baby. Your therapist will also have to adapt their strokes to accommodate this side lying position.

Some massage therapists use special pregnancy cushions, but at Rejuvenations, we prefer to use pillows to provide stability. The best position for a pregnant woman during massage is lying on the side—this provides the most stability for the baby and is comfortable for you. You’ll always be covered with a sheet and blanket for your modesty. Pregnancy massage can be performed with as much or as little clothing on as you are comfortable with. The therapist will adapt their technique to accommodate your needs.

How Often Should You Get a Massage?

How often you should get massage during your pregnancy is up to you. Many women get weekly massage during their last trimester, but it varies depending on the individual. However frequently you decide to get massage, it will help make your pregnancy even more special. So don’t wait…start feeling great today.

lava shell massage

Do you love hot stone massage? We did too… until we discovered lava shell massage. We love it because it provides all the benefits of the hot stone massage: The heat relaxes the muscles, while the natural sea shell allows the therapist to do specific deep tissue work. What makes them different than the hot stones is the lava shells retain their heat throughout the massage, so no more breaks to refresh the stones. And it only takes a few minutes for the lava shells to heat up, so you can decide to upgrade at a moment’s notice. Yes, we love hot lava shell massage and we know you will too!   Our rates are:

  • 60 minutes, $135
  • 90 minutes, $163

Yes, they are real shell. In a hot lava shell massage, natural clam shells are heated with a natural, self heating gel. Like hot stones, the heat is uses to help relax the muscles so that the therapist can work deeper for a more intense therapeutic experience. And, because the heat of the shells is so relaxing, most people can receive deeper work. That makes the hot lava shell massage ideal for people who are extremely tight, but need good, deep work.

We like to warn clients that hot lava shell massages are very addictive! Once you experience this ultimate relaxation, it’s hard to go back to a normal therapeutic massage. Book your hot lava shell massage today!

Why Should You Get a Sports Massage?

$

benefits of sports massageWhat do the Washington Nationals and the Olympic Figure Skating Team have in common? Both have sports massage therapists on staff to keep the athletes performing at their peak.

While you may not train at the same level as a professional, your exercise routine can still be hard on your body—you may notice that your muscles feel tight and sore after a good workout. To keep yourself injury free and able to enjoy your workouts, you need to take care of your body. Sports massage—sometimes called exercise massage—can help.

What is sports massage?

Quite simply, sports massage is a therapeutic massage technique where the sports massage therapists concentrates on helping the person recover from, or prevent, sports-related injuries. Sports massage often focus on problem areas like hamstring muscles, IT bands, and rotator cuffs. Massage helps muscles heal between workouts.

Benefits of Sports Massage

If you work with a trainer, they’ve probably stressed the importance of letting your muscles heal in between workouts. Massage can facilitate that healing process. In fact, massage for sport injury prevention is one of the primary reasons we see athletes at Rejuvenations Massage. Massage for flexibility is another benefit of it.

When you exercise, the constant build up of tension in the muscles can lead to stresses on your joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Many people will ignore these muscle aches, feeling like they aren’t a “serious enough” athlete to need sports massage. Massage will help with flexibility and keep your muscles supple.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a beginner or a pro—muscle injury is very uncomfortable and, when ignored, can cause serious damage that prevents you from exercising at all. Research shows that sports massage (when applied by a skilled, trained therapist) is the most effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the muscular-skeletal system. That’s why regular massage may help prevent injuries. Massage is great as a muscle strain treatment or muscle sprain treatment. Couple stretching and massage for added benefits to keeping your body injury free.

More Benefits of Sports Massage

  • It gets your blood pumping. The stroking movements move fluid through blood vessels and lymph vessels, which is especially important in tight or damaged muscle tissue because blood can’t flow through a tight muscle, depriving the tissues of vital nutrients and the energy to repair. (Exercise helps blood flow too, but massage also stretches the muscles, which helps nutrients pass through more easily.)
  • It increases tissue permeability. Therapeutic massage opens the pores in tissue membranes, which allows fluids and nutrients to pass through. This helps remove waste products such as lactic acid and encourages the muscles to take up oxygen and nutrients, which help them recover quicker.
  • It stretches tissue. Massage stretches tissues that you can’t stretch yourself, such as the sheath or fascia that surrounds the muscle. This releases tension and pressure build up.
  • It breaks down scar tissue. Scar tissue is the result of previous injuries or trauma, and can lead to inflexible tissues that are prone to injury and pain.

Who benefits from sports massage?

Whether you’re training for triathlons, training with weights, or taking water aerobics, your exercise routine will be much more satisfying and fun if you stay injury free.

Can massage improve your game? Yes. Massage is shown to improve performance. We see people athletes of all types: runners, cyclists, marathoners, triathletes, yogis, and dancers. Anyone who exercises can benefit from a sports massage.

When to get a sports massage

There is no right time for a sports massage. Professional athletes will get a massage before a sport event, and then again after. We’ve heard stories of athletes getting a massage during the event! It’s all beneficial.

Massage after a race, such as a marathon or cycling event, is especially beneficial. After all, you’ve just seriously exerted every bit of effort you had to perform; you’re body will appreciate the rejuvenating effects of a sports massage.

Sports massage vs deep tissue?

You may ask what the difference between sports massage and deep tissue. Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic technique. Sports massage is a focus on massage therapy to specifically help the body recover from exercise. A sports massage therapist my use deep tissue techniques, and they may use other techniques in your sports massage.

Sports massage therapists

Several of talented staff are sports massage therapists and have additional training in sports massage. As athletes themselves, they understand exactly what you need to perform at your absolute best. Book your sports massage today! Just book a therapeutic massage and let your therapist know that you are interested in a sports massage…they take care of you.

Therapeutic vs Deep Tissue Massage

$

At Rejuvenations Massage Therapy, we specialize in therapeutic massage, which for many people is synonymous with deep tissue massage. That makes sense because deep tissue massage is the most common of the therapeutic massage modalities—and if that’s what you’re looking for, you’ve come to the right place.

Therapeutic Massage vs Deep Tissue

Therapeutic massage is a general term that describes any type of massage modality that helps relieve pain, reduce stress, and work on a specific problem—such as a frozen shoulder. People tend to assume therapeutic massage means deep tissue massage, and that they will get a very strong massage. But this is not always the case. Deep tissue massage is great at breaking down scar tissue and getting your blood circulating, but it may not be what you need on a particular day. A good therapist will apply the specific techniques and the right amount of pressure to address your need, and sometimes that’s a lighter touch.

Types of Therapeutic Massage

There are several different types of therapeutic massage in addition to deep tissue massage, such as:

  • neuromuscular massage
  • myofascial massage
  • trigger point therapy
  • sports massage

Many therapists will use a combination of techniques depending on what your body needs. In addition, therapists will often take additional classes in different techniques. You can see our therapists specialties by clicking their bios.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

Most of our clients are interested in deep tissue massage, and that makes sense because it is a great way to manage pain. Deep tissue massage—as well as the other therapeutic massage methods—can give you a lot of relief from chronic pain. Many of our clients come in for frozen shoulder treatment and neck pain—two side effects of working on computers all day.

Deep Tissue Side Effects

Many people want to know what the side effects of deep tissue massage are. That’s a great question, and it varies from person to person—and it can even vary for you depending on what’s going on in your body the day you get a massage. Typically, people may feel more muscle soreness for a day or two after the massage, especially if the therapist gives you a strong massage. A deep tissue massage shouldn’t cause horrible pain—and if it does you need to tell your therapist you need less pressure. However, if they’ve been working your muscles, you will probably feel it as the toxins leave your body.

Another side effect is a feeling of disorientation when the massage is over (we call it massage drunk). You may be a little light headed and out of it. That’s very normal. Just sit in the lobby and drink some water until the feeling passes! You’ll usually be fine in 10 to 15 minutes.

Finally, a deep tissue massage will leave you dehydrated. That’s why your therapist gives you water when it’s over. It is very important to drink plenty of water after a therapeutic massage.

Where to Get Deep Tissue Massage

At Rejuvenations Massage Therapy, we specialize in deep tissue massage. We offer deep tissue massage near Herndon, Reston, Great Falls, Fairfax—all of Fairfax County and Loudoun County. We even have clients that come to us from Bethesda and Arlington!

PREGNANCY MASSAGE HELPS YOU FEEL GREAT

My second pregnancy was really hard on my body. I had a prenatal massage at Rejuvenations and I was hooked. Knowing that my therapist was trained in pregnancy massage gave me the peace of mind to relax and let go — I knew I was in “good hands.” I started counting down the days in between my appointments. My son loved the massages, too. He would wiggle and dance during the massage, then go to sleep for hours. It was like magic.”— Brittney, Reston, VA

Pregnancy is a joyful time as you prepare for the newest member of your family. But many women experience back pain in pregnancy… and leg pain, and general exhaustion. And if you’ve already got little ones at home, relief may feel like an unattainable goal. We can help pregnancy pain so you can feel great!

The Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

If you’re experiencing any of the normal discomfort associated with pregnancy, then the question is not if you want a pregnancy massage, but when is the best time to get one. The answer to that question is today — whether it’s a massage in the first trimester or third trimester.

Many women wait to get massage in the 3rd trimester, and immediately wonder why they suffered for so long. There is no reason to avoid massage in first trimester; prenatal massage has never been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage, but it has been associated with making the expectant mother feel good.

In fact, perinatal massage — regular massage before, during and after your pregnancy — can be an important part of your health regime. Why? Because pregnancy is a time of profound change: Your center of gravity changes and your muscles and joints have to work differently. Perinatal massage ensures your body moves through that change with ease at each stage.

Safe Massage for Pregnancy

Many expectant mothers wonder if pregnancy massage is safe for the baby. The answer is yes. It’s not only safe, it’s often very beneficial for you and your growing baby. A safe massage for pregnancy is one performed by a massage therapist with advanced training in prenatal massage, as all of our therapists are.

Generally, pregnancy massage uses moderate pressure applied to the muscle groups to relax muscle tension and improve lymphatic and blood circulation. These techniques specifically address many common discomforts associated with the skeletal and circulatory changes and hormone shifts pregnancy brings about. A skilled therapist can help with pain relief during pregnancy as your body goes through these changes.

A prenatal massage is different from a regular massage in that we use pillows or cushion systems to support your body (We use “the BodyCushion” system for face down massage for pregnant women if indicated). It is very comfortable!

If you have back pain in pregnancy, massage can definitely help. It is also great for:

  • Sciatic Pain
  • Muscle / Leg Cramps
  • Edema / Swelling
  • Sacral Joint Pain
  • Stretch Marks

Pregnancy massage also helps your body prepare for delivery by helping increase elasticity and range of motion in the joints and muscles associated with childbirth. And by helping blood flow in the legs, prenatal massage can reduce the chances of edema, varicose veins, and blood clots. If you already suffer from these conditions, don’t worry — they don’t automatically exclude you from being able to have a pregnancy massage. However, if you have any high-risk conditions, it’s important that your physician is aware of any complimentary health treatments you’re receiving, and we require a note from your doctor stating that you are cleared for massage.

We have had clients ask if they can get a massage to induce labor. This is called “induction massage.” While studies show there is no direct evidence a massage can cause you to go into labor, we do know that stress inhibits labor. By reducing your stress, we can help your body naturally progress to labor. We like to joke that the best way to induce labor is to schedule a pregnancy massage on your due date — many of our clients call from the delivery room to cancel their appointment. It seems to be very effective.

Whatever stage of pregnancy you are in, massage can help you feel great. Book your appointment today!

MASSAGE PROVIDES CHRONIC PAIN RELIEF

100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain (Institute of Medicine of The National Academies). If you are one of them, massage therapy can provide chronic pain relief.

When you suffer from pain — even minor, yet chronic pain — your body can’t relax. And when your body can’t relax and regenerate, you get stressed, irritable, cranky or upset. Add this to the physical pain you experience, and it is safe to say chronic pain takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on you. Massage to help pain is one of the most common reasons clients come to Rejuvenations.

Chronic Pain Relief for Physical Symptoms

Studies show that massage is one of the most effective methods of chronic back pain relief. Even more so than pharmaceuticals. We see that in the number of clients who ask for trigger point massage for pain. Whether it’s a lumbar spine issue, herniated disk, or some other cause, the muscles of the back tighten as a way to protect the injured area — which ends up causing even more pain. Deep tissue massage, especially using Swedish massage and and trigger point massage for pain release and loosen the pain points.

One study showed that for people who got massage to help pain for ten weeks, daily functioning improved on average between 2 to 4 points on a 23-point scale and pain improved about 2 points on a 10-point scale. More than one-third (36% and 39%) of patients in the study’s massage groups said their pain was nearly or completely gone, compared to 4% in the usual care group (that took traditional medications).

Massage for back aches is not the only chronic pain massage can help: it is good for all muscle aches.

The Emotional Benefits of Chronic Pain Relief

Addressing the physical side of chronic pain relief is important, but massage also greatly benefits the emotional toll chronic muscle aches and pains have on you. Deep tissue massage, especially Swedish and trigger point massage for pain, help. Studies show that massage:

  •      Improves sleep patterns
  •      Creates a general feeling of well-being,
  •      Helps release pent up emotions, and
  •      Reduces anxiety

For example, a study at the Touch Research Institutes, University of Miami School of Medicine, found that massage improved fibromyalgia patients’ moods. Another study by the American Fibromyalgia Syndrome Association found that patients reported sleeping better with regular massage: they began sleeping for longer periods at a time and had more restful sleep, thus improving their moods. (Suffer from fibromyalgia? Read more about it.)

How often should you get massage to reap the emotional benefit of addressing chronic pain? It’s different for everyone. What we do know is you’ll get better results if you are on a regular schedule — whether it’s monthly, weekly, or some other formula that works for you. Studies show that a half hour massage a few times a week has tremendous benefit. However, most of our clients who get massage for pain come in monthly for 60 or 90 minutes. The best thing to do is work out a treatment plan with your massage therapist.

Massage for chronic pain relief helps minimize your physical pain and alleviates the stress and anxiety associated with it. When you feel relaxed, your emotional state will be improved and life will seem a little bit brighter.

Our massage therapists are trained in all deep tissue massage methods. Book an appointment today and start feeling good.
